Academies

Communication Arts Academy

The Communication Arts Academy is one of three mini-
schools within
a larger middle school environment.  We are a community of
learners
whose focus centers on communication arts including
creative writing,
journalism, telecommunications and playwriting.  While we
have a
rigorous curriculum in all major subjects, our academy
stresses
English Language Arts and Social Studies.  Students
communicate via
a student council set up to emulate our country’s governing
system.
We believe in strong student involvement.

Cultural Arts Academy

The Cultural Arts Academy is comprised of the following:
drama,
music, creative arts, poetry, computerized graphic design
and dance.
Literacy is infused through the arts.  Students in the Cultural
Arts
Academy understand that literacy is one of the keys to
success.
Students are empowered, enabled, engaged and
enlightened through
our focused program.  Students are videotaped and their
works are
shared in the community.

Special Programs

ASTRAL Gifted &Talented Program

The core philosophy of the gifted and talented program is
the SEM

students
in diverse subject areas. Students will receive additional
instruction in
academics (advance classes such as Math A Prep, Spanish
Proficiency Regents, Advanced Literature and Earth Science
Regents), Technology, Foreign Language and the Arts.
Through the
Acceleration Process, our Gifted and Talented students will
be more
prepared for the challenges that arise in High School and
College.
